Mageshima Island

Japanese: 馬毛島 - まげしま

An uninhabited island located in the sea about 10km west of Tanegashima in southern Kagoshima Prefecture. It belongs to Nishinoomote City. It is a low-lying Neogene island with a highest point of 71m, and is home to many subtropical plants, including a virgin forest of cycads. The endemic species, the narrow-leaved ant-dwarf grass, was discovered on the island in 1953. You can also see land hermit crabs, a nationally designated natural monument. Wild deer called Mageshika live here. The surrounding area is a good fishing ground for flying fish. The area is 8.40 ^km2 .

鹿児島県南部，種子島西方約 10kmの海上にある無人島。西之表市に属する。最高点 71mの低平な新第三紀層の島で，島内はソテツの原生林をはじめ，亜熱帯植物が多く，固有種のホソバアリノトウグサが 1953年に発見されている。また国指定天然記念物のオカヤドカリなども見られる。マゲシカと呼ばれる野生のシカが生息する。周辺はトビウオの好漁場。面積 8.40km²。
