The capital of the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean. The metropolitan area has a population of 2,138,262 (1993). The western half of Hispaniola was originally called Santo Domingo, and was established as the oldest colony in the New World, from which the city's name derives. The city was founded in 1496 by Columbus's brother, Bartolomeo Columbus, at the mouth of the Osama River in the southern part of the island, and was used as a base for expeditions to the islands of the Caribbean and the Latin American continent. As a result, it is also known as the home of the University of Santo Tomás de Aquino (now the University of Santo Domingo), the first university in the New World to be founded (1538), as well as administrative offices and a cathedral.
