A. squarrosa Nees is native to Brazil, and is a species with bright yellow inflorescence bracts and flowers. Its horticultural variety, cv. Louisae (illustration), has pointed, long, ovate leaves arranged opposite each other, and the upper surface of the dark green leaves has yellowish-white veins, making it highly ornamental.
