Matsui Shoyo

Japanese: 松居松葉 - まついしょうよう

1870-1933 (Meiji 3-Showa 8)
Playwright. His real name was Shingen, and later he went by the pen name Matsui Shoo. He was born in Shiogama, Miyagi Prefecture. He was involved in the editing of Tsubouchi Shoyo's Waseda Bungaku from its founding. In 1894, he published Noboru Asahi: The Tale of Korean Peace in the Yomiuri Shimbun. The following year he joined the Chuo Shimbun and wrote theater reviews for various newspapers. In 1899 he wrote Akugenta for the first Ichikawa Sadanji, and after his death he assisted the second Ichikawa Sadanji. After traveling abroad, he attempted to stage a reformed performance at the Meijiza Theater, but failed. He was a leading figure in the theater world, writing and directing plays for the Bungei Kyokai, the Imperial Theater, and Shochiku. In 1913, he founded the Public Theater with Kawai Takeo.

劇作家。本名真玄。のちの号は松井松翁。宮城県塩釜に生まれた。坪内逍遥の《早稲田文学》創刊から編集に従事。1894年《昇旭（のぼるあさひ）朝鮮太平記》を《読売新聞》に発表。翌年《中央新聞》に入り各紙に劇評を執筆。99年初世市川左団次のために《悪源太》を書き，その没後は2世左団次を助け，外遊後明治座革新興行を企てて失敗した。以後文芸協会，帝国劇場，松竹で劇作･演出に携わり劇壇の重鎮であった。1913年には河合武雄と公衆劇団を興した。
