1870-1933 (Meiji 3-Showa 8) Playwright. His real name was Shingen, and later he went by the pen name Matsui Shoo. He was born in Shiogama, Miyagi Prefecture. He was involved in the editing of Tsubouchi Shoyo's Waseda Bungaku from its founding. In 1894, he published Noboru Asahi: The Tale of Korean Peace in the Yomiuri Shimbun. The following year he joined the Chuo Shimbun and wrote theater reviews for various newspapers. In 1899 he wrote Akugenta for the first Ichikawa Sadanji, and after his death he assisted the second Ichikawa Sadanji. After traveling abroad, he attempted to stage a reformed performance at the Meijiza Theater, but failed. He was a leading figure in the theater world, writing and directing plays for the Bungei Kyokai, the Imperial Theater, and Shochiku. In 1913, he founded the Public Theater with Kawai Takeo.
