Iya River

Japanese: 祖谷川 - いやがわ

A tributary that flows into the upper reaches of the Yoshino River in western Tokushima Prefecture. It is about 54 km long. It originates from Mt. Tsurugi, the highest peak in Tokushima Prefecture, and joins the Yoshino River at Ikeda in Miyoshi City. It flows from Mt. Higashi-Iya to Mt. Nishi-Iya, and turns north, forming a horizontal valley that crosses the Shikoku Mountains, forming the deep gorge of the Iya Valley. There are power plants at Iya, Ichi, Deai, and Minawa, and power source development is progressing. The river basin is lacking in flat land, so the mountain slopes are cut open and buckwheat, konjac, tobacco, paper mulberry, and mitsumata are cultivated. Most of the river basin is an unexplored area from the legend of the Heike refugees, and among the houses are the Shoin-zukuri style village headman's house and the tradition of the retirement system. There is a Kazura Bridge that conveys old techniques, and it has been designated as an Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan.

徳島県西部，吉野川の上流部に注ぐ支流。全長約 54km。徳島県の最高峰剣山に源を発して，三好市の池田で吉野川に合流する。東祖谷山から西祖谷山に入って流れを北に転じるところが四国山地を横切る横谷で，祖谷渓の深い峡谷をなす。祖谷，一宇，出合，三縄などの発電所があり，電源開発が進展。流域は平地に乏しく，山地斜面を切り開き，ソバ，コンニャク，タバコ，コウゾ，ミツマタなどの栽培が行なわれる。流域の大部分が平家落人伝説の秘境で，民家には書院造の名主の家と，隠居制の伝承がみられる。古くからの技術を伝えるかずら橋がかかり，国の重要有形民俗文化財に指定されている。
