A general term for coelenterates (cnidarians) belonging to the genus Dendronephthya in the family Dendronephthidae of the class Anthozoa. They grow on rocky reefs at depths of up to 50m on coasts facing the open ocean in warm seas. Overall height is about 20cm. Several enlarged main stems arise from a thick, short stalk, and short, finger-like branches grow upward. Polyps form large clusters scattered or densely grown on the stems, and each polyp is surrounded by tiny supporting spicules. Depending on the species, the spicules can be white, yellowish brown, red, purple, etc., and larger spicules protrude outward, making them rough to the touch.
