Mount Kurikoma

Japanese: 栗駒山 - くりこまやま

A double stratovolcano (→composite volcano) that stands on the border of Miyagi, Iwate, and Akita prefectures. It is an active volcano that is constantly under observation. It is also called Sugawa-dake in Iwate and Dainichi-dake in Akita. It is 1,626m above sea level. It is the source of the Minase River on the Akita side, the Iwai River on the Iwate side, and the Ichihasama River, the Nise River, and the Misasama River on the Miyagi side. The highest point is Dainichi-dake on the outer rim, and to the north is the central crater cone Tsurugi-dake at 1,100m. A small eruption occurred in 1944, forming Lake Showa. The mountain area is covered with ash, birch, and beech trees, and most of it is national forest. Komagatane Shrine (whose deity is Emperor Yamato Takeru) is located 1km southwest of the summit. The starting point for the climb is Ichinoseki and Ishigoe Stations on the JR Tohoku Main Line, but you can also climb directly from Sugawa Onsen on the Iwate side or Komanoyu Onsen on the Miyagi side. There are many hot springs at the foot of the mountain, including Kurikoma Goto and Sugawa Onsen, and it was designated as Kurikoma Quasi-National Park in 1968. A large landslide occurred during the 2008 Iwate-Miyagi inland earthquake, and at Komanoyu Onsen, people were killed when they were caught in the mudslide.

宮城県，岩手県，秋田県の県境にそびえる二重式（→複式火山）の成層火山。活火山で，常時観測火山。岩手県では須川岳，秋田県では大日岳ともいう。標高 1626m。秋田県側で皆瀬川，岩手県側で磐井川，宮城県側で一迫川，二迫川，三迫川の水源地。最高点は外輪山の大日岳で，その北方に 1100mの中央火口丘剣岳がある。1944年に小規模な噴火があり，昭和湖が形成された。山地にはホオ，シラカバ，ブナが茂り，大部分は国有林。頂上から南西 1kmに駒形根神社（祭神は日本武尊）がある。JR東北本線の一ノ関，石越駅が登山口であるが，直接は岩手県側の須川温泉または宮城県側の駒ノ湯温泉から登る。山麓には栗駒五湯，須川温泉など温泉が多く，1968年栗駒国定公園に指定。2008年の岩手・宮城内陸地震では大規模な地すべりが発生し，駒ノ湯温泉では土石流に巻き込まれた死者が出た。
