A city at the northern foot of the eastern Ethiopian plateau. Population 195,000 (1994). Due to the abundance of groundwater, settlements have existed since prehistoric times. It developed in the 19th century as the midpoint of the railway linking Addis Ababa and the port of Djibouti. As nighttime travel was dangerous, this point, a one-day journey from either end, was necessary as a transfer point. It is also the entrance to the eastern plateau. A cotton cloth factory was built with Japanese investment and many Japanese people lived here, but it is now nationalized.
