The term refers to a craftsman who works with ebony, and by extension to a craftsman who specialized in high-end furniture in early modern France. In the 17th century, it became popular to use ebony, a hard wood from the south, in furniture, but processing it required special skills, and craftsmen called themselves ébenists to distinguish themselves from ordinary furniture makers. The use of ebony in Rococo furniture declined, but the term ébenist remained. The main customers of ébenists were the French royal family and the court aristocrats surrounding them, and they also often fulfilled orders from foreign courts.
