1612‐76 The greatest grammarian, poet and literary theorist of the German Baroque period. He rejected the cultural backwardness of his time and the excessive proliferation of foreign languages due to the Thirty Years' War, and advocated purifying and nurturing the mother tongue, preserving the German spirit and raising national consciousness. He was the most important member of the national language association (established in 1617), which was established for that purpose, and wrote A Detailed Work on the German Language (1663), in which he attempted to grasp the laws of the German language and provide an overview of historical considerations.
