The Tale of the Farmer - Starch Story

The Tale of the Farmer - Starch Story
A kana zoshi (traditional Japanese story). Author unknown. Published during the Kan'ei era (1624-44). A debate in the form of a question and answer about the superiority of male and female homosexuality. The title of the book comes from the fact that male homosexual lovers are "kiyashiyamono" (elegant dandies) while female homosexual supporters are "tafusha" (country folk), and it also reflects the popularity of shudo at the time and the tendency to see it as elegant. In a debate in which both sides insult each other, cite historical accounts from Japan and China to give themselves authority, and assert their own legitimacy, the side that upholds common sense in female homosexuality ends up winning, but this debate about the superiority of the two sexes was a theme that was taken up again and again, even in the Hachimonjiya edition.
