…a chartered company that received a charter from the German emperor in 1885. The German Colonization Company, founded by Carl Peters (1856-1918), obtained what it called protectorate treaties from the chiefs of several tribes on the present-day mainland of Tanzania, across from Zanzibar, in 1884. Based on this, the German government declared the area a German protectorate the following year, entrusting its governance to the German Colonization Company.
