Edgar John Rubin

Edgar John Rubin

Danish psychologist. Born in Copenhagen. From 1904 to 1911, he studied philosophy and psychology under Harald Höffding (1843-1931) and Alfred Georg Ludwig Lehmann (1858-1921) at the University of Copenhagen. He then studied under Müller at the psychology laboratory of the University of Göttingen in Germany, where he conducted classic experiments on figure-ground and received his doctorate in 1915. His classmates at the time, Erick Rudolf Jaensch (1883-1940) and Katz, were both influenced by Husserl's phenomenology. He returned to Denmark in 1916 and became a private lecturer at his alma mater, and later succeeded Lehmann as professor of experimental psychology and headed the laboratory. His research on figure-ground was published in Danish in 1915, but it did not attract much attention at the time. It was only after the German version was published in 1921 that it was incorporated into Gestalt psychology and had a major influence on psychology thereafter. His books include " Visuelle wahrgenommene Figuren " (1921).
