Chungcheong-do (English spelling)
A region in the midwest of the Korean Peninsula, one of the eight provinces of Korea. It belongs to South Korea and is administratively divided into North and South Provinces and Daejeon Metropolitan City. The populations of North Chungcheong Province (capital city, Cheongju) were 1,442,191, South Chungcheong Province (capital city, Daejeon) were 1,855,346, and Daejeon City was 1,268,432 (all as of 1995).

Geographically, the country is divided into two contrasting regions, the east and the west. The eastern part is the Han River basin, sandwiched between the Charyeong Mountains in the north and the Sobaek Mountains in the south, and is mostly covered with hilly mountains, with the only flat land being the small Chungju Basin.
