A port city on the west coast of Indonesian Borneo (Kalimantan). The capital of West Kalimantan Province. It lies almost directly on the equator. Located downstream of the Kapuas River, it is a distribution center for coconuts, rubber, pepper, gold, and other products in the interior of Borneo. Many Chinese have immigrated to the city and are engaged in rice farming in the area. It is known for the fact that many residents were killed on suspicion of anti-Japanese plots during the Japanese occupation (1942-1945). Population: 554,764 (2010).
