A type of scleroprotein. It is a structural protein that is widely present in mammalian connective tissues (cartilage, tendons, ligaments, aorta, etc.) along with proteins such as collagen. It is yellow in color and is particularly abundant in yellow connective tissue. It is insoluble in normal solvents and has rubber-like elastic properties. It is hydrolyzed by certain proteolytic enzymes. Its X-ray form is amorphous. Electron microscopic images also do not show a fine fibrous structure.
