The name of a prostitute in the Edo period. (1) A prostitute from Tanbaya in Shimabara, Kyoto. Some say that she committed suicide with a man named Yorozuya Sukeroku before the Hoei era (1704-11), or that she shaved her head and became a nun after avenging Sukeroku's death, but this is not certain. In November 1706 (Hoei 3), her story was performed at the Soun-za in Kyoto as "Sukeroku Shinju Kamiko Sugata" and at the Kataoka Nizaemon-za in Osaka as "Kyo Sukeroku Shinju." Around 1709, Yorozuya Sukeroku Doyuki (Itchu-bushi) and Sennichiji Shinju (Gidayu-bushi) were performed. (2) A prostitute from Miuraya in Yoshiwara, Edo. It is said that there have been three generations of this Agemaki ("Seji Hyakudan"), and it was associated with Sokaku Sukeroku from Kamigata and introduced to Edo in 1713 ("Hanakata Aigo no Sakura"), becoming the heroine of the "Sukeroku" play, one of the 18 major Kabuki plays, which represents the spirit and spirit of Edo courtesans.
