With the rise of the Enlightenment in the 18th century, the mysteries of the African interior, especially the source and water systems of the Nile, Congo and Niger Rivers, ignited the intellectual curiosity and adventurous spirit of Europeans. In 1770, Scottish physician James Bruce discovered Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile. He conducted his exploration at his own expense, but it was not until 1788 that organized exploration at public expense began, when the Society for Promoting the Discovery of the Interior of Africa (abbreviated as the African Society) was founded in London.
