Salinity is the total amount of solid matter contained in 1 kg of seawater, expressed in grams. However, all carbonates are converted to oxides, all bromine and iodine are replaced with chlorine, and organic matter is completely oxidized. However, since this measurement is not easy, it is usually converted by measuring the amount of chlorine or the electrical conductivity of seawater, taking advantage of the fact that the ionic composition of seawater is constant regardless of location. The unit of salinity is per thousand (per mille), but when calculated from electrical conductivity, practical salinity units (psu) are used.
