Kurt Lewin

1890‐1947
German-born psychologist. He studied at the University of Berlin, where, except for a period during World War I when he served in the army, he continued his research there until 1933, when he emigrated to the United States to escape the Nazi persecution of the Jews. At the time, he was influenced by the active research being carried out at the university by W. Köhler and others who proposed a new theory of psychology, Gestalt psychology. However, Lewin was interested in the emergence of human behavior, and applied the concept of holistic dynamic structure to areas such as desire and motivation, rejecting physiological explanations and proposing his own field theory that incorporated mathematical concepts such as topology.

ドイツ生れの心理学者。ベルリン大学に学び，第1次大戦従軍の一時期を除き，1933年ナチスのユダヤ人迫害を避けてアメリカに移住するまで同大学で研究を続けた。当時，同大学では新しい心理学説ゲシュタルト心理学を提唱したW.ケーラーたちが活発に研究を行っており，その影響を受ける。しかし，レウィンは人間行動の生起に関心をもち，欲求や動機といった領域に全体的力動的構造の概念を適用するとともに，生理学的説明を排し，トポロジーなどの数学的概念を援用した独自の場の理論を唱えた。
