A city in the Liaocheng district of northwestern Shandong Province, China, on the border of Hebei Province. Population 690,000 (1994). Located in the center of the lower Yellow River plain, where the Grand Canal (Huitong River, also called Wen River) and the Wei River (Yongji Canal) join, it was a key transportation hub in North China. Due to the devastation caused by the flooding of the Yellow River and changes in its course, the land conditions were unstable, so the prefecture capital was often relocated and its affiliation changed. During the Northern Wei dynasty, part of Qingyuan County, which had existed since the Han dynasty, was separated to form Linqing County. After the Huitong River was established in the Yuan dynasty, it developed as a key point for shipping to Beijing, and during the Ming dynasty, it was abolished as a county and promoted to a prefecture, which continued until the Qing dynasty.
