British Caving

… Organized, purposeful caving began in the mid-19th century, but it was not until the 20th century that it was established. The National Speleological Society of the United States, a global caving organization, was founded in 1941. Caving in Japan began to spread and develop in the 1950s, and was heavily influenced by organizations such as the Cave Groundwater Research Society and the Shikoku Caving Club, which were founded by Masuzo Ueno and Hiroshi Yamauchi, as well as the encyclopedia of caving, British Caving (1953). Currently, there are less than 1,000 caving people in Japan, but activities continue to be carried out mainly by the Japan Caving Association (established in 1959), the Japan Speleological Society (established in 1975), and the Japan Speleological Society (established in 1978), and there is active discovery of new caves and overseas research and exploration activities. …

…　組織化，目的化された探検としてのケービングが始まったのは19世紀半ば以降であるが，その確立は20世紀に入ってからのことであり，世界的なケービング組織であるアメリカ合衆国のNational Speleological Societyは1941年に設立されている。日本におけるケービングの普及･発展は50年代からで，上野益三や山内浩らによる洞窟地下水研究会や四国ケービングクラブなどの組織活動のほか，ケービングの百科事典ともいえる《British Caving》(1953)の影響が大きい。現在，日本のケービング人口は1000人に満たないが，日本ケイビング協会(1959設立)，日本洞窟学会(1975設立)，日本洞窟協会(1978設立)を中心として活動が続けられ，新洞窟の発見や海外への調査･探検活動も活発に行われている。…
