British Caving

… Organized, purposeful caving began in the mid-19th century, but it was not until the 20th century that it was established. The National Speleological Society of the United States, a global caving organization, was founded in 1941. Caving in Japan began to spread and develop in the 1950s, and was heavily influenced by organizations such as the Cave Groundwater Research Society and the Shikoku Caving Club, which were founded by Masuzo Ueno and Hiroshi Yamauchi, as well as the encyclopedia of caving, British Caving (1953). Currently, there are less than 1,000 caving people in Japan, but activities continue to be carried out mainly by the Japan Caving Association (established in 1959), the Japan Speleological Society (established in 1975), and the Japan Speleological Society (established in 1978), and there is active discovery of new caves and overseas research and exploration activities. …
