The discovery of the Groningen gas field in the Netherlands in 1959 prompted attention to explore its extension in the North Sea. The first exploration results in the North Sea were the discovery of several structural gas fields, including the West Sole gas field in 1965, and by 1972 a pipeline network had been completed, allowing supply to domestic consumers to begin. In 1970, the first North Sea oil field, Ekofisk, was discovered in Norwegian waters, and within a short period of time several oil fields were discovered along the median line between Norway, the UK and Denmark.
