Wage in kind

Wage in kind
Also called a truck system. Wages paid in goods other than money, securities equivalent to goods, or coupons. It was seen in the 19th century British mining industry, Japanese mines before World War II, and in many countries around the world, including Japan, during World War II, where in-kind payment was widely used as part of wages due to shortages of consumer goods. This method hindered wage earners' freedom to purchase consumer goods, often resulting in a de facto wage cut, and had other disadvantages, such as unfairly restricting workers to their workplaces, so its abolition became an important goal of the early labor movement. Governments around the world also put effort into regulating it from an early stage, and in Japan, the Factory Act of 1916 prohibited it in principle, and after World War II, Article 24, Paragraph 1 of the Labor Standards Act prohibited in principle in-kind payment except in cases stipulated by labor agreement. Currently, in Japan, in-kind payment is rarely used, but some people believe that many of the welfare facilities at companies and other places that are an important part of working conditions are a type of in-kind payment.
