His career is unclear, but it is known that he apprenticed to the firm of Lancaster furniture maker Robert Gillow and moved to London around 1760 to set up shop there. Although no works that can be identified as his remain, Hepplewhite's name became famous through a collection of his designs, The Cabinetmaker and Upholsterer's Guide, published by his widow two years after his death.
