An old town in the southern part of Amakusa Kamishima, Amakusa County, Kumamoto Prefecture. The lowlands are in the Sumoto River basin, and the town produces rice, tobacco leaves, and mandarin oranges, as well as livestock and vegetable cultivation. National Route 266 passes through the town. Historic sites include the remains of Sumoto Castle and Ogakura Kannon Temple. In March 2006, the town merged with Hondo City, Ushibuka City, and the towns of Ariake, Goshoura, Kuratake, Shinwa, Itsuwa, Amakusa, and Kawaura to become Amakusa City. Area: 32.87 km2 . 熊本県天草郡,天草上島南部の旧町。栖本川流域に低地があり,米,葉タバコ,ミカンを産するほか,畜産,蔬菜栽培も行われる。国道266号線が通じる。栖本城跡,小ヶ倉観音などの史跡がある。2006年3月,本渡市,牛深市,天草郡有明町,御所浦町,倉岳町,新和町,五和町,天草町,河浦町と合併し市制,天草市となる。32.87km2。3032人(2003)。
