F. Meselson and J. Weigle used phage lambda, which has visible mutations, and the ability to change the density of DNA with non-radioactive isotopes ( ^12C vs. ^13C , ^14N vs. ^15N ) to show that genetic recombination (in this case, intrachromosomal recombination) occurs by DNA breakage and recombination (1961).
