Brown Pelican - Brown Pelican

A seabird of the Pelecanidae family of the order Pelecaniformes in the class Aves. It is a large species with a wingspan of up to 2.3 meters. It breeds on the coasts of tropical and temperate regions of North and South America. Unlike other species of Pelecanidae, it dives into the sea from the air to catch fish, opens its pouch-shaped lower beak, and chases and catches the fish with its upper beak.

鳥綱ペリカン目ペリカン科の海鳥。大形の種で、翼開長2.3メートルに達する。南北アメリカの熱帯から温帯地方の沿岸で繁殖する。ペリカン科の他種と異なり、空中から魚を目がけて海に飛び込み、袋状になっている下の嘴(くちばし)を広げ、上の嘴で魚をそこに追い込んでとらえる。
