Branle

Japanese: branle
Branle

...The name comes from the Gabo people, a mountain tribe from Provence. It is a dance of moderate speed in 4/4 or 2/2 time, which developed from the 16th century dance branle, and usually has two quarter notes on the upper beat. The musical structure is in two parts. ...

From 【French Music】

...Many other songs have been handed down, including those for woodcutters, sailors, carpenters, stonemasons, weavers, etc. Among the "dance songs" or dances, it is noteworthy that dances from classical suites, such as the bourré (which has variations such as 2 beats in Berry and fast 3 beats in Auvergne) and the branle, which is a circle dance that goes counterclockwise while stepping left and right, have been preserved in a folk form. Among the regional dances that remain in various regions, the farandole (farandoulo in Provencal) from southern Provence, where men and women join hands and dance to the music of the galoubet (small vertical flute) and tambourine (long drum), is famous.
