One of the groups of Kampo doctors who resisted the Meiji government's policy of adopting Western medicine and campaigned for the survival of Kampo medicine. In 1875, Western medicine (the so-called seven Western subjects) was added as a subject for the medical license examination, and the movement to preserve Kampo medicine began when Kampo medicine was effectively no longer recognized in the system. One of these groups was the founding of the Onchi-sha, which was established on March 10, 1879, by Tokyo Kampo doctor Yamada Norihiro and others who gathered together their comrades and established the company in Tokyo. They called for support from all over the country, published the journal Onchi-i-dan, and further launched the movement by establishing the Japanese and Chinese Medicine Training Center (later the Onchi Medical School) to train the next generation.
