King of Sparta, ancient Greece (reigned c. 510-491 BC). He thwarted his fellow king Cleomenes I's attempts to invade Attica (c. 506 BC) and take hostages from the pro-Persian faction in Aegina (491 BC), but was subsequently driven from his throne by Cleomenes's schemes and fled to Darius I of the Achaemenid Empire. Historian Herodotus records that he accompanied and advised Xerxes I on his invasion of Greece in 480 BC. He was awarded four cities in Asia Minor, where he spent the last years of his life.
