American film director. Born in Berlin, Germany. Moved to the United States with his family at the age of seven. Dropped out of college to begin acting, gaining popularity as an improvisational actor and entertainer, and in 1963 became a Broadway director, producing a string of hits. In 1966 he made his directorial debut with Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. The following year, he released The Graduate, which won overwhelming support from the younger generation as a coming-of-age film for the new era, and also won the Academy Award for Best Director. His subsequent films include Catch-22 (1970), The Huntsman (1971), Silkwood (1983), Heartbroken (1986), and Working Girl (1988).
