Mike Nichols

American film director. Born in Berlin, Germany. Moved to the United States with his family at the age of seven. Dropped out of college to begin acting, gaining popularity as an improvisational actor and entertainer, and in 1963 became a Broadway director, producing a string of hits. In 1966 he made his directorial debut with Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. The following year, he released The Graduate, which won overwhelming support from the younger generation as a coming-of-age film for the new era, and also won the Academy Award for Best Director. His subsequent films include Catch-22 (1970), The Huntsman (1971), Silkwood (1983), Heartbroken (1986), and Working Girl (1988).

アメリカの映画監督。ドイツのベルリンに生まれる。7歳のとき家族とともにアメリカに渡る。大学を中退して演劇活動に入り、即興芝居の俳優、エンタテイナーとして人気を得たあと、1963年ブロードウェーの演出家となり、ヒット作を次々に生んだ。1966年『バージニア・ウルフなんかこわくない』で映画監督デビュー。翌年の『卒業』は新しい時代の青春映画として若い世代の圧倒的支持を受けると同時に、アカデミー監督賞を受賞した。その後は『キャッチ22』（1970）、『愛の狩人(かりゅうど)』（1971）、『シルクウッド』（1983）、『心みだれて』（1986）、『ワーキング・ガール』（1988）など。
