The aneroid barometer was named after the Greek word anēros, meaning "not liquid," in contrast to the mercury barometer. This type of elastic pressure gauge was later developed into the Bourdon tube pressure gauge, which was invented independently by M. Schinz and Eugéne Bourdon (1808-1884).
