Michael Baius

Flemish theologian. Also known as Bajus. His real name was Michel de Bay. He studied at the University of Leuven and became a professor of theology at his alma mater. He argued that humans, after the fall from sin, are not free to receive God's grace, based on Augustine's anti-Pelagian writings, in opposition to the decisions of the Council of Trent on original sin and justification. In 1567, his theories were summarized in 76 articles and condemned by Pope Pius V. His ideas are considered to be the precursors of Jansenism.
