...A type of percussion instrument that is widely used in Cuban music. It consists of two small drums connected together, each with a wooden body and leather covering only the top (hence the plural bongos). The player sits on a chair, holds the instrument between his knees, and strikes it with his bare hands. The two drums are slightly different in size, and as a rule the smaller one (which is about 4-5 degrees higher in pitch) is placed on the left. By striking the part of the left drum near the edge of the leather strongly with the fingertips of the right hand, a clear, high-pitched sound can be obtained, adding a glamorous effect to the performance. ...
