It consists of two small drums connected together, each with a wooden body and leather covering only the top (hence the plural bongos). The player sits on a chair, holds the instrument between his knees, and strikes it with his bare hands. The two drums are slightly different in size, and as a rule the smaller one (which is about 4-5 degrees higher in pitch) is placed on the left.
