Gondwana (English spelling)

Gondwana (English spelling)
The historical name of a region in central India. It refers to the area from the Vindhya Mountains in the north to the lower reaches of the Godavari River in the south, centered on the borders of the states of Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra. This name was used after an Islamic historian in the 14th century described the Gond people and their region. The Gond kingdoms flourished from the 14th to the 18th centuries, and the three most powerful kingdoms, Garha, Deogarh, and Chanda, survived even under the Mughal Empire, but were defeated by the Maratha Confederation in the 18th century, and most of Gondwana was annexed by the princely state of Nagpur, and parts by the Hyderabad Sultanate. However, not all Gond kingdoms disappeared, and even after most of the region was ruled by the British from 1818 to 1853, the Chhattisgarh Sultanate continued to exist until Indian independence.
