...The activities of those whom we call Christian missionaries left a deep mark on the history of the East and Japan. The project of compiling ancient documents that Belgian Jesuit J. Bollandus (1596-1665) began in the mid-17th century, along with the collection and criticism of ancient documents by the Order of Saint-Maur, centered around the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés in Paris, and its representative, Mabillon, played a great role in establishing a method of historical criticism and building the foundations of modern history. This was also the result of inheriting the tradition of the various monks' passion for academic research. ...
