The general term for the large collection of ancient sculptures brought from Athens to England in the early 19th century by T. Bruce, Earl of Elgin. While serving as the British ambassador to Turkey, Bruce obtained a charter from the Turkish government in July 1801, which granted him "free access to the Acropolis, which was then a Turkish military fortress, to carry out surveys, investigations, excavations, and to remove sculptures and inscriptions." He ordered his subordinates, the pastor Hunt and the painter Lucielli, to collect marble works from the Acropolis hill. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
