Also known as the Japanese squirrel (illustration). A mammal of the rodent family, Sciuridae. A tree-dwelling squirrel found in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, but rare in Shikoku and Kyushu, and although there have been records of captures in Kyushu, its exact habitat is unknown. It resembles the red squirrel (Ezo squirrel), but is smaller and can be distinguished by the white hair at the tip of its tail. The back of the body is black-brown in winter and light brown in summer, with the sides and limbs a beautiful orange-yellow color. The underside of each is pure white. The further north the squirrel lives, the more blue the body color, while those living in the south are more reddish. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
