A parasitic worm belonging to the nematode family that is distributed worldwide, with a high incidence among children. It is the largest of the human intestinal parasitic nematodes, with males measuring 14-30 cm and females 20-35 cm. Eggs in feces are transmitted orally via vegetables or dust. Symptoms include digestive disorders and sometimes ectopic infestation. Santonin and kainic acid were once used as anthelmintics, but pyrantel pamoate is now used.

世界に広く分布する線虫に属する寄生虫で，一般に小児がかかる率が高い。雄14〜30cm，雌20〜35cmで人体腸内寄生線虫のうち最大。糞便(ふんべん)中の卵が野菜やほこりによって経口感染する。消化系障害や時に異所迷入による症状を呈する。駆虫剤としてかつてはサントニンやカイニン酸などが用いられたが，現在はピランテルパモエートなどを用いる。
