[Research History]
Research into Baltic mythology had been difficult, as it had to wait for thorough research into Latvian folk songs, but in recent years, the Latvian-born Swedish scholar Haralds Biezais (1909- ) has conducted critical research into past studies and the vast amount of folk song texts, bringing Baltic mythology into the spotlight once again. His many books in German, including his major work The Family of the Ancient Latvian Heavenly Gods (1972), deal with the world tree in Baltic mythology, and have made a great contribution to Indo-European mythology.
