Uddyotakara (English spelling)

Japanese: ウッディヨータカラ(英語表記)Uddyotakara
Uddyotakara (English spelling)
A philosopher of the Nyāya school in the second half of the 6th century in India. Dates of birth and death unknown. He wrote the Nyāya-vārttika to defend the orthodox Brahmanical theory of proof that had been established since the Nyāya-sūtra, which had received serious blows from the Buddhist school of logic. He attempted to re-establish the five-part method by introducing the six-type theory of contact derived from the Vaisheshika school into the theory of direct knowledge and defining reasoning as a means to it by reflection on evidential causes. He also called himself a Pāśupata (beast-lord) sect of the Shaivite sect, and began to develop a proof of the existence of the presiding deity (Īśvara).
