Bertillonage

...Without looking at a photograph of a particular individual, the data is fleshed out solely based on statistical values, and then compared to photographs taken when the individual was alive or shown to family members to identify the individual. The Bertillonage method of anthropometry, invented in 1879 by French criminologist Alphonse Bertillon (1853-1914), measures eleven specific parts of the human body, namely height, fingertips (the distance from one fingertip to the other when both hands are stretched out horizontally), sitting height, head length, head width, right ear length, cheek width, left foot length, left middle finger length, left little finger length, and left forearm length, and classifies each person into three categories: large, medium, and small. However, with the development of fingerprinting today, this method is no longer used in its original form.
