Penetration

Japanese:
Penetration

A Japanese term for the cracks that appear on the glaze surface of glazed porcelain. The origin of the word "craze" is said to be in the imperial kilns. The famous celadon wares of the Southern Song Dynasty imperial kilns in China were characterized by decorations with large and small cracks in the glaze, and the word "craze" (from imperial kiln) came to refer to cracks in the glaze. Craze can occur due to differences in the shrinkage rates of the glaze and the base, or it can occur when the glaze is exposed to wind and snow for many years.
