...Pope Pius IX's (1846-1978) Syllabus of 1864 was a worldview challenge to modern culture. Leo XIII (1878-1903) opened the Catholic Church to closer relations with the modern world, and Pius X (1903-14) tried to revive the faith within the Church, but Benedict XV (1914-22) and Pius XI (1922-39) faced world unrest caused by war and revolution, and Pius XII (1939-58) had to bear the suffering of all mankind in World War II. The pastoral spirit of John XXIII (1958-63), who said that "the Church must encounter the peoples," was inherited by Paul VI (1963-78), Johannes Paulus I (1978), and further by John Paul II (1978- ). *Some of the terminology that mentions "Benedictus XV" is listed below.
