Benares

...In the early 11th century, it was incorporated under the influence of the Muslim Ghaznavid Empire and became known as Banaras, pronounced in Urdu. In 1794, when it was annexed by the East India Company, it became known as Benares, pronounced in English. Varanasi was a major religious and cultural center of Aryan society around 1000 BCE.
