Monte Cassino (English spelling)

…This monastery was founded by Benedict of Nursia around 529 on Monte Cassino, a mountain halfway between Rome and Naples, and is considered the prototype of European monasteries. It was destroyed by the Lombards around 581 and rebuilt by Petronax in 720, but was destroyed again by the Islamic army in 883 and by the Normans in 1046.
