Semonides - Semonides (English spelling)

Date of birth and death unknown. Ancient Greek elegiac and ambiguous poet, who lived around the 7th century BC. Only a few fragments remain, but one of them, the ambiguous poem entitled "On Woman", is almost a complete work, a sharp satire that compares women to 10 kinds of animals, insects, and other creatures, and is a witty masterpiece. The part that declares all women except for those of the bee sex to be intolerable nuisances is a striking example of traditional Greek anti-feminism. There are also fragments that sing of the view of life.

生没年不詳。古代ギリシアのエレゲイア、イアンボス調の詩人で、前7世紀ごろの人。わずかな断片しか伝わらないが、そのなかの『女について』と題されるイアンボス詩は、ほとんど完全な作品で、女を動物、虫その他の10種に見立てた辛辣(しんらつ)な風刺詩で、機知に富んだ秀作である。蜜蜂(みつばち)の性(しょう)の女以外はすべて度しがたい厄介者と断じるところは、ギリシア伝統のアンチフェミニズムが躍如としている。ほかに人生観を歌った断片もある。
