This refers to a compound R ₃ N ⁺ -O ^- in which an oxygen atom is bonded to the nitrogen atom of a tertiary amine. It is generally a crystalline compound, and those with low molecular weight are very hygroscopic and often contain water of crystallization during crystallization. It dissolves well in water, but insoluble in non-polar organic solvents. It is weakly basic and forms salts with acids. The nitrogen-oxygen bond is a typical semi-polar bond, and has a large dipole moment. The substituents on the nitrogen have a regular tetrahedral arrangement similar to that of carbon compounds, and when they are all different, it can be separated into optically active forms.

第三アミンの窒素原子に酸素原子が結合した化合物R₃N^＋－O^－をいう。一般には結晶性の化合物で，低分子量のものは非常に吸湿性があり，結晶化に際ししばしば結晶水を含む。水によく溶け，非極性の有機溶媒には溶けない。弱い塩基性を示し，酸と塩をつくる。窒素－酸素の結合は代表的な半極性結合であり，大きな双極子モーメントをもっている。窒素上の置換基は炭素化合物と同様の正四面体配置をとり，それらがすべて異なる場合には光学活性体に分割できる。
