Visakhapatnam is a port and industrial city located on the Bay of Bengal in the northeastern part of Andhra Pradesh, in southeastern India. It is the administrative capital of Visakhapatnam district. In the 17th century, the British East India Company established a trading post here. In 1933, the port was renovated, allowing large ships to enter the port, and the shipbuilding industry developed rapidly from the 1970s onwards. It is the state's main port, and ships manganese, sugar, groundnuts, and other products. It is home to a large oil refinery, a steel plant, and the country's largest shipbuilding factory, as well as sugar and tobacco factories. Andhra University is located on the outskirts.
